Resources

In 2021, Aurora worked closely with friends in Oliver Wyman, and GiveOUT to produce two research reports, The Case for Intermediaries and Where are the Rainbow Resources?. These reports uncovered vital data on the challenges faced by our communities, informing the Australian philanthropic sector on the realities of the landscape for LGBTIQ+ organisations.

The Case for Intermediaries

As of 2021, up to 11% of the Australian population identifies as LGBTIQ+ but LGBTIQ+ organisations receive less than 1% of overall funding. In 2021 alongside Oliver Wyman, we produce a report on how LGBTIQ+ organisations fit within the broader Australian charity sector. Diving into the role an intermediary funding mechanism model can play in supporting LGBTIQ+ communities.

Intermediaries exist to more effectively link donors and not-for-profit organisations… Intermediaries can bridge the knowledge gap for funders, as they are often run by people who are representative of the community and have deep expertise in the issues that grassroots organisations are seeking to address.

  • Out of every $100 received by Aussie charities, LGBTIQ+ charities ONLY get 5 cents of that…

  • Out of every $100 of government funding… LGBTIQ+ orgs get just 6 cents…

  • 80% of LGBTIQ+ organisations have 5 or fewer paid staff

  • 77% of organisations face barriers to finding applicable funding… and the same amount face barriers when applying for funding.

  • 17% specifically highlighted that a barrier to accessing funding was purely because funders were not interested in supporting LGBTI OR Q issues

  • In 2023 the health, homelessness, and rights inequities are still immensely disproportionate- as is the funding available to queer organisations despite roughly 11% of Aussies having diverse sexual orientation, sex, or gender…

This report laid the foundation for the next step of our research…

Where are the Rainbow Resources?

While Australia has seen a lot of great progress for queer people since 1999, many still have negative and discriminatory experiences simply trying to access basic healthcare, and our LGBTIQ+ community are more than twice as likely to experience homelessness.

In 2021 we partnered up with GiveOUT and produced the Where are the Rainbow Resources? research report, uncovering shocking but not unsurprising facts on the landscape for LGBTIQ+ organisations across Australia. Including that…

Not only is the LGBTIQ+ sector critically underfunded, but with so many organisations being run by peers with lived experience, there is a huge lack of easily accessible information to aid these organisations in acquiring funding.

As a direct result of these findings, we have continued to collaborate with our friends at GiveOUT and in 2022 we launched the Amplify Pride Fund which seeks to combat the inequities found in this report. The Amplify Pride Fund focuses on marginalised LGBTIQ+ communities, building the capacity of LGBTIQ+ community organisations, providing larger, flexible and more sustainable funding, ease to apply for funding, and opportunities for non-financial support in-house and through our networks.
