The Aurora Group is marking its 10th anniversary by announcing $100,000 in grants for a number of important NSW GLBT community charities.

This larger-than-usual level of annual and once-off grants is possible due to Aurora’s strong financial position following a number of successful events, continued financial support by Aurora’s donors and careful investment by Aurora.

David Moutou, Aurora Chairperson thanked Aurora’s patrons, donors and partners for their support over the past decade, and this year, during Aurora’s 10th anniversary celebrations.

“The funding announced today will be dispersed to a variety of valuable GLBT community charities and projects” Moutou said. “By supporting our events and donating to Aurora through once-off donations and our regular giving program, Aurora supporters have allowed us to invest in a strong, supportive and compassionate GLBT community for the decades ahead”.

“All You Need is Love, the 10th anniversary Aurora Dinner, was our fourth consecutive annual dinner to sell out, due to generous community support and enthusiasm for our events and our cause” Moutou said. “We chose love as the theme to mark our 10th anniversary, and Aurora sincerely loves being part of a community that supports and looks after each other.

Kate Connors, Aurora Deputy Chairperson announced the details of the $100,000 in funding. “Aurora will continue supporting Twenty10 GLBT Youth Services and the Gay & Lesbian Counselling Service of NSW, with major grants of $20,000 each for the year ahead” she said.

“Aurora is also delighted to fund two special projects with once-off grants of $10,000 each” Connors announced. “The first of these will go to Twenty10 for the expansion of their successful Here and Now training program for communities in regional NSW. The second project grant will go to ACON, for the development of their LOVE (Living Older, Visibly & Empowered) Project, addressing the important issue of ageing in the GLBT community”

Connors also announced that $40,000 was being made available as part of Aurora’s annual small grants scheme. “Applications are now open for grants of up to $5,000 each for NSW GLBT community projects” she said. Past recipients have included various regional youth services, The Gender Centre, the Lesbian & Gay Anti Violence Project, Queer Screen, Learn to Include, ACON’s Lesbian Health Project and Come Out Australia, amongst many others.

Eligible charities can find further details of the small grants at Aurora’s website – www.auroragroup.com.au. Applications close 26 November 2010.

Quotes from major and project grant recipients:

Twenty10 – Major Grant – $20,000, and Project Grant (Here & Now) – $10,000

“Without the 10 years of support from The Aurora Group, Twenty10 will not have been able to grow into the organisation that it is today. With Aurora’s support, we have founded a counselling team and continued to provide social and therapeutic support groups to a diverse range of young people in our community. These activities will continue to grow with the ongoing support that we receive from Aurora.”

“We are especially excited by the grant to support our ‘Here and Now’ program for regional communities, which will add great value to the training we do in regional towns as we will be able to fund the strategies that each local community prioritises during the training session.”

Rebecca Reynolds – Managing Director, Twenty10

Gay & Lesbian Counselling Service of NSW – Major Grant – $20,000

“The Board of the GLCS of NSW would like to thank the Aurora Group for its ongoing suppot, and recent significant grant. This grant will enable the GLCS to pay for enhancements to its web presence, fund regular forums covering issues relevant to our communities as well as provide funding for more social activities and support for people looking to overcome issues relating to loneliness.”

Andrew Bredin – Co-President, GLCS

ACON – Project Grant (LOVE – Living Older, Visably & Empowered) – $10,000

“We’re extremely grateful to the Aurora Foundation for funding this important project and thrilled to be working with the Aurora team on it.”

“This is a project that ACON has been trying to establish for some time to celebrate the experience and wisdom of older GLBT community members and make connections between generations. We’re excited that it can now become a reality with this support from Aurora. ”

Mark Orr – President, ACON
